Recipe Ingredients
Find the full printable recipe with specific measurements below.
- Oreo cookies: I crush half Oreo cookies with the filling and half without the filling to give them just the right amount of sweetness in this quick dessert.
- Cream cheese: A block of room temperature cream cheese gives Oreo balls a slight tang.
- Chocolate: I use Ghirardelli chocolate melting wafers (white and milk chocolate) because they melt easily, but choose whatever chocolate you like best for a smooth finish.
How to Make Oreo Balls
These Oreo truffle balls are easy to make and are a similar to a chocolate truffle but with an irresistible rich Oreo cream cheese filling.
- Crush Oreos. The best way to crush oreos is to place them in a blender or food processor. You can also place them in a zip top bag and smash with a rolling pin.
- Mix together the Oreo crumbs and cream cheese with a hand mixer. If it isn’t coming together, get your hands in there and mix it up.
- Scoop and freeze. Use a small cookie scoop to scoop out the dough. Then roll into a ball and place on the pan. Freeze for 10-15 minutes or until slightly firm.
- Dip in the melted chocolate using a fork, tap side of bowl to remove excess chocolate, place on lined baking sheet and decorate as desired.
Recipe Tips
- Room temperature cream cheese. Remember to soften cream cheese. If it’s too cold it won’t mix with the Oreo crumbs. If the Oreo balls are losing their shape, your cream cheese was too warm. Place mixture in fridge for a few minutes.
- Let chocolate cool for a few minutes before dipping. If your chocolate is too hot your balls will start to fall apart. I like to wait around 5 minutes before dipping.
- Decorate immediately: Use different colored melting wafers or use a white chocolate base with sprinkles on top to match the holiday. Add the sprinkles right to the truffle balls after dipping to ensure they stick.
- Holiday variation: To make Christmas Oreo balls I used white chocolate to dip and added red and green sprinkles with some holly berries. Add crushed candy canes to make peppermint Oreo balls. So fun and festive!

Oreo Balls
Video
Ingredients
- 36 OREO cookies (see notes)
- 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese , softened
- 8 ounces white and/or milk baking chocolate (I prefer melting wafers)
Instructions
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a blender or food processor, pulse the Oreos (with filling) into fine crumbs. You can also place the Oreos in a zip-top bag and use a rolling pin to crush them.
- In a large bowl, mix together the Oreo crumbs and cream cheese with an electric mixer. If it isn't coming together, get your hands in there and mix it up.
- Using a small cookie scoop, portion the dough onto the baking sheet. Roll into a ball with your hands. Freeze 10 to 15 minutes, or until slightly firm. You don't want them too cold.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in-between each, until smooth.
- Use a fork to dip the Oreo balls into the chocolate. Tap on the edge of the bowl to get the smooth finish. Use a toothpick to help slide the ball back onto the baking sheet. Before the chocolate hardens, add sprinkles. Let harden completely.
- Store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Recipe FAQs
There are so many varieties of Oreo cookies that can be used! I recommend using classic Oreo cookies, not double stuf Oreos. Double-stuffed will change the texture and be too wet and greasy.
Try other flavors like Golden Oreo dipped in white chocolate or Mint Oreo dipped in melted chocolate with crushed peppermint candies on top.
For a smooth finish when dipping candies, I always use Ghirardelli melting wafers. Wilton candy melts are another option when I need a certain color. Couverture chocolate or almond bark are two other options.
I only use chocolate chips when I am out of everything else as the finish is not as smooth and you may need to add 1/4 teaspoon coconut oil to thin it out as the chocolate is thicker. You can always add nuts or crushed Oreos to to top so it’s not as noticeable.
For a smooth finish on your Oreo cream cheese balls, make sure that your chocolate is melted and stirred until smooth. Also, have all ingredients ready to go so you can move quickly.
Place Oreo cookie ball on a fork and dip into chocolate. You could also use a spoon or skewer. Tap with a fork on the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate and then use a toothpick to push the ball unto the parchment paper. Use the toothpick to draw a line around the edge to break off excess chocolate that pools. Apply decorations immediately.
That depends on how you store the cookie balls. They will keep at room temperature for a couple of days and can sit out on a dessert table for a few hours. I do recommend keeping them in the fridge, though, as they have less of a chance of the chocolate melting.
Oreo truffle balls will last up to 1 week when stored in a covered container in the fridge. Place parchment paper between layers. Oreo cake balls can also be frozen for up to 2 months. You can make them ahead then thaw in the refrigerator and bring them out whenever you need a truffle-like cookie sweet treat.
Outstanding. This is the second recipe I have made from your recipes. The first was the pumpkin, bundt cake. Also outstanding. What a treasure to find these recipes. You are THE BEST.
I made these and they were delicious, but not quite as pretty! When I dipped these in white chocolate, bits of the cake ball seemed to end up in the the white chocolate leaving the finish more of a speckled black and white rather than the solid smooth white finish. Any tips?
Hi Liz! Did you freeze for 10-15 minutes before dipping? You could try dipping them a second time in chocolate to get that finished coat look.
I have followed the recipe but the cookie cream cheese mixture is too sticky to roll into balls. Suggestions?
Hi Claire. You can add more crushed Oreos to get the right consistency. You may have mixed them a little too long.
I am determined to make oreo truffles that look like the ones in your picture. The first hurdle is making them all the same size and shape. My cookie scoop apparently isn’t collecting the same amount of dough each time because some truffles are noticeably bigger or smaller when I form them into balls. The second issue is the coating. I have yet to find a chocolate I can afford that will give me a shiny and smooth exterior. There is always a glob of coating that hardens underneath the truffle no matter what surface I put them on after dipping. Is there a foolproof method to make them look perfect every time? Holiday stress for me is purely driven by my OCD tendencies. Please help! 😂
Hi Steff! I’m so glad you enjoy the recipe and sorry you’ve had trouble with the coating. I do prefer melting chocolate over chocolate chips (they have a smooth finish). I think the main key is working in batches too (you could melt half the chocolate in one bowl and then melt the rest in another bowl half way through). Also, making sure to tap off any excess chocolate before placing them down and then tracing with the toothpick around the edges really helps. Hope that helps!! XO
Perfectly awesome! Had fun making them. I made them a bit smaller so I’d have more ;)
I’m so glad you enjoyed them!
I had ever since I was a kid my gramma made them for me and now I know how to make them thank you
How many will this make?
It depends how large you roll the balls. But it should make about 40.
How many Oreos is good enough for the amount that you did?
36 Oreos.

My son ate nothing but oatmeal raisin cookie till last night when i made these!!! They are delicious :)
My grandsons (6 and 9) loved making these and enjoyed even more eating them!!! Great fun and delicious.
I’m so glad they enjoyed them! Thanks for your comment and review. :)
I just made them. They are delicious!
Super easy! Really tasty! However, if you are going to use the special flavor oreos remember that they come in smaller packages. So if you don’t add the full 36 cookies they will be kinda goopy. Also, if you use the red velvet make sure to add red food coloring or they look like weird dog treats. Still taste great! Just kinda off looking.
Thanks for sharing your tips Rose!!
Hi
Can I make heart shaped ones
Definitely! :)
I made these using Red Velvet Oreos with white almond bark. I put a couple of drops of red food coloring in the white chocolate to make it pink. They were a huge hit. I fancied them up by calling them red velvet truffles.
Sounds delicious! Such a great idea!
