Recipe Ingredients
Find the full printable recipe with specific measurements below.
- Oreo cookies: I crush half Oreo cookies with the filling and half without the filling to give them just the right amount of sweetness in this quick dessert.
- Cream cheese: A block of room temperature cream cheese gives Oreo balls a slight tang.
- Chocolate: I use Ghirardelli chocolate melting wafers (white and milk chocolate) because they melt easily, but choose whatever chocolate you like best for a smooth finish.
How to Make Oreo Balls
These Oreo truffle balls are easy to make and are a similar to a chocolate truffle but with an irresistible rich Oreo cream cheese filling.
- Crush Oreos. The best way to crush oreos is to place them in a blender or food processor. You can also place them in a zip top bag and smash with a rolling pin.
- Mix together the Oreo crumbs and cream cheese with a hand mixer. If it isn’t coming together, get your hands in there and mix it up.
- Scoop and freeze. Use a small cookie scoop to scoop out the dough. Then roll into a ball and place on the pan. Freeze for 10-15 minutes or until slightly firm.
- Dip in the melted chocolate using a fork, tap side of bowl to remove excess chocolate, place on lined baking sheet and decorate as desired.
Recipe Tips
- Room temperature cream cheese. Remember to soften cream cheese. If it’s too cold it won’t mix with the Oreo crumbs. If the Oreo balls are losing their shape, your cream cheese was too warm. Place mixture in fridge for a few minutes.
- Let chocolate cool for a few minutes before dipping. If your chocolate is too hot your balls will start to fall apart. I like to wait around 5 minutes before dipping.
- Decorate immediately: Use different colored melting wafers or use a white chocolate base with sprinkles on top to match the holiday. Add the sprinkles right to the truffle balls after dipping to ensure they stick.
- Holiday variation: To make Christmas Oreo balls I used white chocolate to dip and added red and green sprinkles with some holly berries. Add crushed candy canes to make peppermint Oreo balls. So fun and festive!

Oreo Balls
Video
Ingredients
- 36 OREO cookies (see notes)
- 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese , softened
- 8 ounces white and/or milk baking chocolate (I prefer melting wafers)
Instructions
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a blender or food processor, pulse the Oreos (with filling) into fine crumbs. You can also place the Oreos in a zip-top bag and use a rolling pin to crush them.
- In a large bowl, mix together the Oreo crumbs and cream cheese with an electric mixer. If it isn't coming together, get your hands in there and mix it up.
- Using a small cookie scoop, portion the dough onto the baking sheet. Roll into a ball with your hands. Freeze 10 to 15 minutes, or until slightly firm. You don't want them too cold.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in-between each, until smooth.
- Use a fork to dip the Oreo balls into the chocolate. Tap on the edge of the bowl to get the smooth finish. Use a toothpick to help slide the ball back onto the baking sheet. Before the chocolate hardens, add sprinkles. Let harden completely.
- Store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Recipe FAQs
There are so many varieties of Oreo cookies that can be used! I recommend using classic Oreo cookies, not double stuf Oreos. Double-stuffed will change the texture and be too wet and greasy.
Try other flavors like Golden Oreo dipped in white chocolate or Mint Oreo dipped in melted chocolate with crushed peppermint candies on top.
For a smooth finish when dipping candies, I always use Ghirardelli melting wafers. Wilton candy melts are another option when I need a certain color. Couverture chocolate or almond bark are two other options.
I only use chocolate chips when I am out of everything else as the finish is not as smooth and you may need to add 1/4 teaspoon coconut oil to thin it out as the chocolate is thicker. You can always add nuts or crushed Oreos to to top so it’s not as noticeable.
For a smooth finish on your Oreo cream cheese balls, make sure that your chocolate is melted and stirred until smooth. Also, have all ingredients ready to go so you can move quickly.
Place Oreo cookie ball on a fork and dip into chocolate. You could also use a spoon or skewer. Tap with a fork on the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate and then use a toothpick to push the ball unto the parchment paper. Use the toothpick to draw a line around the edge to break off excess chocolate that pools. Apply decorations immediately.
That depends on how you store the cookie balls. They will keep at room temperature for a couple of days and can sit out on a dessert table for a few hours. I do recommend keeping them in the fridge, though, as they have less of a chance of the chocolate melting.
Oreo truffle balls will last up to 1 week when stored in a covered container in the fridge. Place parchment paper between layers. Oreo cake balls can also be frozen for up to 2 months. You can make them ahead then thaw in the refrigerator and bring them out whenever you need a truffle-like cookie sweet treat.

Delicious and really easy to make!
Just to clarify, when crushing the cookies into crum, does this include the white center filling of the Oreo cookie, or do I remove it?
I want to try this out tonight :-)

Yup, you crush them with the white filling (using a blender or food processor works best) :)

So yummy!! Can these be made and then frozen?
I haven’t tried freezing them before. It might change the texture a bit, but I think it should work if you let them thaw before eating. :)
