What is Elf on the Shelf?
In 2005, Carol Aebersold published a book titled, The Elf on the Shelf, and so the tradition began! Scout Elf usually arrives at the house on December 1st (some families choose to have theirs arrive the day after Thanksgiving).
This mischievous little elf serves as Santa’s eyes and ears, reporting back to the North Pole each night about who’s been naughty or nice. When the elf comes back in the morning he will move to a new spot, waiting for the children to find him.
If you’ve never done Elf on the Shelf, you can order your own kit on Amazon (affiliate link).

FAQ
Most people start on December 1st (25 days is plenty), however some families have it start the day after Thanksgiving.
Read the book first. Then explain in a letter or print one off (here’s a free printable Elf on the Shelf letter). Some families have the elf bring a little present on the first day like Christmas pajamas, but it is not necessary.
The most important rule is to not touch your Elf or he will lose his magic. Scout Elves can’t talk but they are great listeners.
Each night they help their Elf find a new spot to sit. They can get creative or it can be as simple as moving the Elf to a new shelf.
Do a scavenger hunt with the elf, hide him in the tree, make a snow angel with flour, have him TP the Christmas tree, create service activities, create a Christmas movie marathon and many more ideas in this post.
No, there can be one elf per family. That is what most families do.

So let’s hear it… does an Elf come to your home? What’s his/her name?
Ehma is our elf’s name. My oldest named her when she was 3. I think she was trying for Emma, but it came out Eh-ma and it stuck (I love it because I’m a Canadian living in the US, eh?)
Love it!
We have siblings Daniel and Destiny. It was just Daniel for the first 2 years, then he brought his sister about 5 years ago. Yes, our Elves have been around for 7 years and we do it big with a welcome breakfast and everything.
Our elf’s name is Tipy!! Since I have a very curious 4 years old. He always climbed to the top.
I was older when shelf elves started appearing and I don’t have children…..soo if we ever had one, my grown-up family might name him after the movie, “Elf”, and call him Buddy.
chippy is my granddaughters elfs name and this year he is bringing his wife back with him. She hasn’t met her yet so chippy will have to introduce them. Not sure what her name is going to be yet. They are making their grand entrance Saturday night.
AH so cute! She’s going to be so excited!
Doc is our elf’s name. When he first arrived my oldest was obsessed with Doc McStuffins and wanted to name him after her.
Our elf’s name is Darington He also has 4 vintage elves who have joined him. Yes 5 is a lot of mischief, but 5 times the fun! These elves are from the 1960s.
Oh wow! So cool to have vintage elves!
One elf is named “Rocky”. We never had an elf when my kids were younger but we have Rocky now for the grandkids and the LOVE him and all he does for them. He leaves them a riddle/joke and a kindness task to do everyday.
Love the kindness act idea! I’m going to do that, thanks for the idea!
Ralphie is what we named our elf! We were watching A Christmas Story and somehow we decided to name the elf after Ralphie 😂
Love that movie!
Our elf just returned a couple of nights ago. Her name is Ruby Sue. We might be slight Christmas Vacation enthusiasts. Haha! My daughters have their birthdays on November 14th & 15th, so our elf always “flies in” using their birthday balloons. They get a kick out of it every year. Lol!
Love that! Such a fun way to celebrate!
Shelby! We aren’t sure if she is a boy or a girl 🤣 my kids are 3, 6 and 8- they are SO excited. Shelby always delivers their advent calendars on the first day.
Love your blog and have shared with all my mama friends!
Ah love that! Thanks for sharing with your friends!

Our elves are Jacko, Ho Ho, Cocoa and Mallow
Such cute names!!
This is my first year doing Elf on the Shelf so I didn’t know I had to name him. My son is 2 years old 10 months so I’m nervous e about him not getting the concept (oh well) and I’ve named his elf Noel. I’m going to be putting a twist to it by following a lot that emphasizes on the birth of Jesus but with the elf telling it. I’m excited and I love all of your fun ideas too.
Love that!!
His name is Fle [pronounced fleh] because that is Elf backwards. Rather fun to say and to hear!
My kids are 16 & 17. Our Elf is named Sprinkles! I love to move him around every night and I especially love that my kids still look for him! ❤️❤️
Love that your teens still look for him too!
We have Jack & Jack Junior-the American Girl elf on the shelf 😊
