5 Minute Cake Batter Popcorn
I absolutely love making popcorn! Whether it is using this simple homemade popcorn seasoning to jazz up a bowl of plain popcorn or making sweet popcorn recipes to enjoy as a dessert.
This funfetti popcorn is a favorite, as well as cookies and cream popcorn, marshmallow caramel popcorn and microwave caramel corn.
This “sprinkled” popcorn is one of my kids absolute favorites. It is SO addicting! And let’s be honest… I love anything cake batter. Whether it’s funfetti cake dip or rice krispies…sign me up!
The best part? It only takes 5 minutes to make. You can’t beat that! This cake batter popcorn is great for when you need a last minute treat for a birthday party, classroom treat or late night snack. It also packages up really well. Just place in a clear bag and tie with twine and a cute little tag.
Anything with sprinkles wins, don’t you think? They just make me happy. And I’m positive this birthday cake popcorn will make you happy, too!
Only 4 Ingredients!
One of my favorite things about this recipe is that it only takes 4 ingredients to make. It’s similar to my favorite white chocolate popcorn recipe, but with the yummy addition of cake mix and sprinkles. All components are simple and are usually ingredients I tend to always have in the pantry. Check them out below:
- Popcorn: Lightly salted popcorn works best. You can pop your own stovetop popcorn, or buy a bag that’s already popped.
- White chocolate: White chocolate chips, bark or vanilla candy coating works great.
- Cake mix: The dry funfetti cake mix is what gives the popcorn that delicious cake batter flavor.
- Sprinkles: Who doesn’t love sprinkles?! They add such a fun touch and nice crunch.
How to Make Funfetti Popcorn
- Place in a bowl. Add popcorn to a large bowl.
- Melt the chocolate. Melt white chocolate in the microwave until smooth.
- Mix together ingredients. Stir funfetti cake mix into melted chocolate, then pour over popcorn and combine until fully coated.
- Add sprinkles. Spread out onto wax paper and then top with sprinkles. Let cool completely, then break into smaller pieces. Enjoy!
Makes a “Sweet” Gift!
This cake mix popcorn is perfect for gifting! It’s super easy and everyone always raves over how delicious it is.
Simply place a handful (or two) into a clear bag and tie with twine and a cute tag.
You could also shape the popcorn into balls, then poke a wooden stick or straw through. The little popcorn balls on a stick make the cutest party favor or treat!
Other fun desserts that we love to make include this easy recipe for funnel cake, churros and Disney caramel apples!

Feel like a real pastry chef at home.
Have you ever tried this with other cake mixes besides Funfetti? I wanted to use other sprinkles (fall colors). Wondering if I could buy just white cake mix or even French Vanilla and add my own sprinkles and it would still turn out? Maybe there is another secret ingredient in the Funfetti or ones with “pudding in the mix” wouldn’t work?
Hi Heidi! I haven’t tried it with other cake mixes but I think it should work the same! :)
This was such a fun and delicious idea! Thank you!
I have never thought of making cake batter popcorn, but I’m so glad you did! SO delicious!!
Popcorn is a bit softer the next day because it absorbs some moisture from the marshmallow mixture but still has a great taste. Save. Our popcorn pie is a fun and tasty sweet and salty taste. And it’s so easy to do.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for your comment and review! :)
That batter popcorn absolutely something new for me! Looks yummy! Thx for sharing batter popcorn recipe, I definitely add it to my cookbook!
Thank you for the recipe.
Thanks for the recipe. I’’m confused as to what the “chocolate” part is in your recipe tho.. please clarify
The vanilla candy coating is similar to white chocolate. You can use either in this recipe!
Awesomeness pictures! Cake batter popcorn looked soooo good, I had to try and make them. I used your suggestion and used 1/2 cup funfetti cake mix. Thanks for sharing Jamielyn!
I’m so glad you tried it! I love this recipe! :)
This tasted so so good.
So glad you liked it!
This looks so great! Do you think the popcorn would stay together if it were shaped into a ball and put on a stick? I’m going to do a party at a park and don’t want grubby little hands digging into a bowl!
Thanks for the recipe.
That is a really great idea! And I think it would work!
Could you please share what type of popcorn you used?
We used lightly salted popcorn. You can make your own by air popping and lightly salting, or by making it in a pan or microwave. :)
Wow look delicious ! I love your cake and how you mix it <3 Bookmarked for free weekend so i can try it ;) Thank you.
Delish — how did you keep the unpopped kernels out of the candy coating?
Hi Melissa! I try and an pick them out before adding the coating! :)
Hello and waving madly! I found your popcorn on Pinterest and followed “the crumb trail over”! What an awesome recipe and page!! I just shared on FB.
I will definitely be making this for my daughter as a surprise!! Thank you! ♥
Thanks for stopping by Didi! This cake batter popcorn is divine. :)
Wondering if you have ever tried this with white chocolate instead of candy melts? I’ve never used candy melts so I don’t have anything to compare!
Thanks!
Yes I have, it turns out just as good! :)
Popcorn is my all time favorite late night snack. I usually opt for buttered (bad I know!). Can’t wait to try this version. Pinned!
Buttered popcorn is the best! Hope you enjoy this cake batter version! :)
Mmm – looks so good!!
Could you use normal white chocolate melted?
Yes definitely!
