5 Minute Cake Batter Popcorn
I absolutely love making popcorn! Whether it is using this simple homemade popcorn seasoning to jazz up a bowl of plain popcorn or making sweet popcorn recipes to enjoy as a dessert.
This funfetti popcorn is a favorite, as well as cookies and cream popcorn, marshmallow caramel popcorn and microwave caramel corn.
This “sprinkled” popcorn is one of my kids absolute favorites. It is SO addicting! And let’s be honest… I love anything cake batter. Whether it’s funfetti cake dip or rice krispies…sign me up!
The best part? It only takes 5 minutes to make. You can’t beat that! This cake batter popcorn is great for when you need a last minute treat for a birthday party, classroom treat or late night snack. It also packages up really well. Just place in a clear bag and tie with twine and a cute little tag.
Anything with sprinkles wins, don’t you think? They just make me happy. And I’m positive this birthday cake popcorn will make you happy, too!
Only 4 Ingredients!
One of my favorite things about this recipe is that it only takes 4 ingredients to make. It’s similar to my favorite white chocolate popcorn recipe, but with the yummy addition of cake mix and sprinkles. All components are simple and are usually ingredients I tend to always have in the pantry. Check them out below:
- Popcorn: Lightly salted popcorn works best. You can pop your own stovetop popcorn, or buy a bag that’s already popped.
- White chocolate: White chocolate chips, bark or vanilla candy coating works great.
- Cake mix: The dry funfetti cake mix is what gives the popcorn that delicious cake batter flavor.
- Sprinkles: Who doesn’t love sprinkles?! They add such a fun touch and nice crunch.
How to Make Funfetti Popcorn
- Place in a bowl. Add popcorn to a large bowl.
- Melt the chocolate. Melt white chocolate in the microwave until smooth.
- Mix together ingredients. Stir funfetti cake mix into melted chocolate, then pour over popcorn and combine until fully coated.
- Add sprinkles. Spread out onto wax paper and then top with sprinkles. Let cool completely, then break into smaller pieces. Enjoy!
Makes a “Sweet” Gift!
This cake mix popcorn is perfect for gifting! It’s super easy and everyone always raves over how delicious it is.
Simply place a handful (or two) into a clear bag and tie with twine and a cute tag.
You could also shape the popcorn into balls, then poke a wooden stick or straw through. The little popcorn balls on a stick make the cutest party favor or treat!
Other fun desserts that we love to make include this easy recipe for funnel cake, churros and Disney caramel apples!

I was nervous about the cake mix, but this recipe is legit. I did “cook” the cake mix in the microwave for 1 minute (stirring after 30 secs). No idea if that was long enough, but it made me feel better. I used a bag of Lesser Evil butter flavor popcorn (Costco) and a bag of Ghirardelli white chocolate chips. Then stirred in some salted peanuts before pouring it out on the parchment. Try not to eat it all in one sitting – so good!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Can I in I use other kinds of cake mix
Yes you can :)
Oh my….Holy hannah! I am at a loss for words….there are no words in the English dictionary that describes how good this is….
Ah I’m so glad to hear! Thanks for your review :)
Has anyone ever made this with original bagged skinny pop popcorn? Or does it have to be a microwave or stove top popped popcorn
You can use Skinny Pop! I use that all the time when making fun popcorn recipes to make it easier :)
This works even better if you use the Chester’s puff corn! No unwanted kernels in your teeth and it makes it perfect for young kids and the elderly!
What a great idea! I’ll have to try that sometime :)
I am gonna do this and I am wondering if you have tried CocoMakers Cake Drip? I’m looking for that almost cooling feeling/tase drizzle that sweet chaos or zebra on have….
I haven’t tried that, but let me know how it goes if you give it a shot!
Any idea how long this keeps refrigerated? I’m considering making a few different gourmet flavors for gifts and wondering how far ahead I can make them. 🤔
Should stay fresh up to 5 days.
do I use dry cake mix? like from a box
Yup :D
You are a savior. I have tried these popcorns using the instructions followed by you and the output was awesome. My kids love it. Before that I was ordering these popcorns from Thatcher’s Gourmet Popcorn but this is the first time, I had made it at home.
Hope you will share more popcorns flavored recipies.
Yay, I’m so happy to hear that you loved the recipe Nina! This cookies and cream popcorn recipe is also another favorite: https://www.iheartnaptime.net/cookies-cream-popcorn/
Thanks Jamielyn. I will try that too and will let you know.
Thank you!!
So easy and delicious made a double batch fir a party. Some other recipes that use cake mix say it has to be heated to a certain temp or 2 30 minutes intervals to be safe. Have you heard of this? We will definitely be making again so addictive. Perfect mix of sweet cans salty
If you are worried about using raw flour, you can heat treat the flour to kill any bacteria before using. Simply place the flour in a microwave safe bowl. Then microwave in 30 second increments and stir in between until the flour reaches 165°F. Let the flour cool before using.
