Why I Love Homemade Buttermilk Waffles

  • Classic buttermilk waffles: A classic recipe for buttermilk waffles is different than Belgian waffles! It can be made in any waffle maker with simple pantry ingredients.
  • Fluffy and crisp: From-scratch waffles are so much better than a packaged mix! This homemade breakfast treat results in big, fluffy waffles with crisp edges every time.

How to Make Buttermilk Waffles

In a large bowl, whisk together dry ingredients including flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Learn how to make buttermilk at home if you don’t have any on hand. In a separate bowl whisk together eggs and buttermilk. Slowly whisk in the melted butter and vanilla.

Mixing batter in a bowl.

Make a well in the dry ingredients and then pour wet ingredients into the flour. Stir until combined (don’t overmix). Rest for 5 minutes while the waffle iron heats.

Cooked waffles on a waffle iron.

Preheat waffle iron on medium-heat, then spray with non-stick spray. Add about 1/2 cup of the batter to the grid and cook until the waffle iron goes off, about 3 minutes. Adjust settings on your waffle maker to get the crispy waffle texture you like.

Favorite Waffle Toppings and Variations

  • Add-ins: For some variations, I like to add sprinkles, nuts, chocolate chips or even a sprinkle of flax seeds or chia seeds.
  • Waffle maker shapes: There are so many fun ones! Just test a few waffles first to know the amount to add to the maker.

FAQs

Why use buttermilk in waffles?

Buttermilk contains an acid which reacts with the baking soda to create a lighter, fluffier waffle! It also adds a subtle tang of flavor. While using buttermilk from the store is best, you can create a substitute at home by adding lemon juice or white vinegar to milk.

What to serve with buttermilk waffles?

My favorites tend to be classics like bacon in the oven, scrambled eggs and hash browns. Fresh fruit always rounds out the meal or brunch.

How to store buttermilk waffles?

Cool completely then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 2-3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

What is the best way to reheat a buttermilk waffle?

I love to reheat homemade waffles in the toaster. This helps retain their crisp edges without turning soggy in the middle like a microwave is prone to do (although in a pinch it works!). You could also reheat them in the oven at 250°F for a few minutes.
