Baked Apple Chips in the Oven
Baked apple chips are made by thinly slicing apples and baking them until they’re crispy. Seasoned with cinnamon they are a nutritious alternative to potato chips and great for lunch boxes along with a pumpkin chocolate chip cookie, of course!
These cinnamon baked apple chips are high on my list of guilt-free apple desserts, as well as cinnamon oat baked apples or crockpot apple butter. It’s one of my favorite healthy snacks to enjoy with a cup of hot chocolate in the fall!
Why I Love This Recipe
- Healthy and simple. The perfect healthy snack to grab on-the-go, throw into lunch boxes or just to snack on. They are amazing and made with just 3 ingredients!
- Crispy, sweet and budget friendly. After baking in the oven, these dried apple chips have the perfect sweet and crunchy texture. Plus, it’s a fraction of the cost to make them at home vs purchasing store-bought apple chips!

- Apples: This recipe is perfect to make after you go apple picking. Use any sweet and crispy variety including Fuji, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Jonathan and Melrose.
- Sweetener: A few Tablespoons of sugar or maple syrup gives them a sweeter, more caramelized taste. If using maple syrup, make sure to use the real deal – no pancake syrup!
- Cinnamon: The spice from the cinnamon mixed with the sweetness from the apples is a delicious combination! For even more fall flavor, use apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice.
How to Make Baked Apple Chips
I used to think you needed a dehydrator in order to make fruit chips. Nope! You can easily bake apple chips in the oven. Just follow the simple steps below.
- Slice Preheat oven to 225ºF and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silpat. Slice apples and lay out on top of baking sheets (make sure they don’t touch).
- Mix. Mix together the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Then sprinkle the mixture over the tops of the apples. If using maple syrup, simply brush the tops.
- Bake. Place both baking sheets in the prepared oven and bake for 1 1/2 hours. Flip apples over and continue baking for 1 more hour, or until the apples have reached your desired crispiness.
Expert Tips
- Best apples to use. Varieties that are sweet and crisp will give you the best baked apple chips. I love Fuji apples, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Gala or a variety.
- Slice the apples thin. The thinner they are, the quicker they’ll cook and the more crispy they’ll get. It’s important to cut them into same sized slices too, so that they evenly cook in the oven. If you have a mandoline, you can use that instead of a knife.
- Spread in a single layer. Make sure none of the slices are touching and spread them out evenly on your pan. They won’t stick together and the outside will get crispy.
- Cook low and slow. The key to getting perfectly crispy homemade baked apple chips is to bake them at a low heat (225ºF) and cook for several hours (about 2 1/2 hours). No need to use a fancy dehydrator to make these – the oven works just fine!
Ways to Enjoy Apple Chips
- As-is! Swap potato chips for these healthy and crunchy cinnamon apple chips.
- Mixed into trail mix or homemade granola for added sweetness and crunch.
- Crushed on top of overnight oats, an oatmeal bowl or a yogurt parfait.
- As a crunchy topping for a fall salad instead of croutons.
- Mixed in with stovetop popcorn for a sweet and salty taste.

Recipe FAQs
You can use a mandoline slicer or sharp knife to thinly slice the apples into rounds that are about 1/8-inch thick. A mandoline will be quicker to work with and give you more uniform slices, however a knife will work just as well!
An apple corer will be your easiest option, although you can also use a pairing knife or a small cookie cutter to remove the core as well.
No. Baking them low and slow dehydrates and makes them crispy without the use of a dehydrator. If you were to raise the temperature they would most likely burn.
They will keep for up to 1 week if stored in an airtight container or bag at room temperature.
