Ingredient Notes
These adorable Christmas Oreo cookies don’t need much more than you would find in the holiday baking aisle!
Find the full printable recipe with specific measurements below.
- Oreos: You can use regular Oreos, double-stuffed Oreos, Golden Oreos or peppermint Oreos. Even gluten-free Oreos can be used!
- Melting chocolate wafers: I love to use white chocolate for white chocolate oreos and milk chocolate melting wafers or dark chocolate. They create a smooth finish.
- Decorations: Depending on what look you’re going for with your Christmas Oreos you’ll need gel writers, sprinkles, M&M’s and candy eyes.
Best Chocolate For Dipping
- I highly recommend high-quality Ghirardelli melting wafers for taste and texture.
- Wilton candy melts will work but aren’t technically chocolate so the taste will be different. I prefer to use the colored ‘chocolate’ candy melts for decorating, though as you can match the colors to what you need.
- Chocolate bars taste the best but take longer to set.
- Chocolate chips are my least favorite as they do not melt as smooth and create a thicker coating. If you use chocolate chips, I recommend adding a teaspoon of coconut oil or vegetable oil when melting the chips.
How to Make Christmas Oreos
The real key to making these cute Christmas Oreos is having fun with decorating but first you will need to cover your Oreos in chocolate.
- Melt your chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave at 50% power. Stir until smooth.
- Dip your Oreos with a fork. Tap the fork on the edge of the bowl to remove any excess.
- Place on wax or parchment paper lined baking sheet. Draw a circle around the Oreo with a toothpick if there is excess so that it will dry with clean lines.
Decorating Dipped Oreos
Once the chocolate dipped Christmas Oreos are set, it’s time to decorate! We love making the five different versions below:
For snowmen: While the white chocolate is still wet, place 2 candy eyes for eyes and 1 orange M&M perpendicular to the cookie as the carrot nose. Let harden completely and then pipe 5 black dots for the mouth.
For Christmas trees: Let the milk chocolate harden completely. Fill a piping bag with melted green candy melts and pipe a Christmas tree shape in the center of the Oreo. Cover the tree in sprinkles. Add a dab of melted chocolate to a pearl and place on top of the tree. Once hardened, dip bottom in melted white chocolate.
For reindeer: While the milk chocolate is still wet, add 2 candy eyes and 1 red M&M for the nose. Place 2 pretzel halves on top for the antlers.
For Santa suits: Let the red candy coating harden completely. Pipe a line of black gel across the lower center as the belt. Add a dab of melted chocolate to 1 yellow M&M and 3 pearls. Place the M&M in the center of the belt as the buckle. Right above it, add the 3 pearls as buttons.
For sprinkles: While the white or milk chocolate is still wet, sprinkle with festive sprinkles. Let set completely.
Chocolate-Covered Christmas Oreos Tips
- I find a fork the best dipping tool! A fork is easy to flip the Oreos in the chocolate as well as lift them out and tap them on the side of the bowl.
- Make sure your chocolate is smooth before dipping the holiday Oreo cookies.
- Place parchment paper on a baking sheet to make it easy to transfer.
- Make sure to remove excess chocolate from the bottom of the Oreo before placing onto the paper. If there’s too much of a spill around, simply draw a circle with a toothpick around the base.
- Sometimes when my kitchen is too warm, the candy melts take a while to set. Pop the Christmas Oreo cookies into the fridge to help speed up the hardening process.
Storing and Freezing
- Storing: Store these Christmas Oreos will keep in an airtight container at room temperature up to 3 weeks.
- Freeze: You can also freeze chocolate-dipped Oreos up to 3 months. Freeze in a single layer between sheets of parchment paper. Thaw in the refrigerator. You may want to consider what decorations you use, such as pretzels, as some may not hold up to freezing and thawing.

Can I use icing instead of the melted chocolate?
You can, but the texture of the Oreo might be more soft than crunchy.
How long do you think the chocolate dipped Oreos will stay fresh? Can they be made a week before Christmas?
