The Easiest Way to Cook Corn in the Microwave
You’d be surprised at how many yummy dishes you can easily make in the microwave. It may not be your first pick on most days, but it’s great for when you’re short on time. I use my microwave to make simple, every day recipes like scrambled eggs, or even fun sweets like microwave caramel corn.
Now that summer is here, we’ve been eating lots of corn. It’s fresh, easy and my kids love it! I thought I would share a quick tip on how to cook corn on the cob in the microwave. It may seem silly, but I remember wondering how to cook it the first time I bought it when I was first married. It’s really easy and so so good! One of my favorites is to grill corn, but sometimes it’s nice to have a quick meal too. Making it in the microwave is such a time saver and is SO simple. This will become one of your favorite ways to cook corn when you’re in a pinch!
How to Microwave Corn on the Cob
- Wrap in wet paper towel. Wet a paper towel and squeeze out excess water. Then wrap your paper towel around the corn and place on a microwavable plate.
- Cook in microwave. Cook in the microwave on high for 5 minutes. Allow to cool and then remove paper towel.
- Season and enjoy. Butter all sides of the corn, then salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy!
Quick Tips
- If you’d like to grill the corn instead, simply wrap in foil and cook for 10 minutes, turning occasionally.
- You can also boil or steam it as well.
- Want to experiment with the seasonings you use? Try making a Mexican version by adding butter, chili powder, lime juice, cilantro and cotija cheese. Or try spreading on some pesto and sprinkling with parmesan cheese. Yum!
- We like to use corn holders to make it a little easier to eat. Sometimes we even cut it off the cob with a corn scraper and just eat with a fork.

This was so easy to make! Perfect for when it was raining and I couldn’t grill.
Is it 5 minutes per ear of corn?
I usually do 2 for 5 minutes and then add a minute for each additional ear of corn! I wouldn’t recommend cooking more than 4 or 5 though. :)
I can cook corn on the cob in the microwave less than 5 minutes, it takes me wetting the corn, wrapping the corn and cooking it all of 3 minutes. It is very good.

Hi. At what power setting did you put the microwave? Mine is 600 watts at max. If you put yours at a higher setting I could set a longer time to cook. Thanks
Hi! I just cooked mine at 100% power. I tried looking at my watts and I could find my max, sorry!
What about frozen corn? Dry napkin and a minute longer? Experimenting…
I’ve never tried frozen corn before, but I would think that would work! Let me know if you give it a try! :)
That’s exactly what I was going to say, ladies! No more having to pick off all the hairs! cut off the bottom before husking and it’s even easier, but squish it out! ;) Will never do COCob any other way!
I love using my microwave to make corn on the cob! I have a cookbook that suggested leaving it in the husk for the microwave. It works great and the silk comes right off when you husk it.
Thanks for the tip Becky, I’ll have to try that next time…husking is always the worst part!
The way I do it is to leave corn in the husk and microwave for 3 min per ear. Then husk and enjoy.
Thanks for the idea Vicki! :)
We cook corn in the husk in the microwave too. It is so fast and easy and tastes good too. If you are watching calories and fats, it cooks beautifully and there is no need for butter. The taste is great.
