Resurrection rolls are one of my favorite Easter traditions. Marshmallows disappearing into crescent rolls represent an empty tomb and are a sweet way to share the Easter story!
Empty Tomb Rolls
Easter treats for the kids (and kids at heart) like Easter bunny bait, Easter cake pops, and Cadbury egg cookies are always fun to make. However, Easter brunch recipes like resurrection rolls, also known as empty tomb rolls, are recipes that feed the soul.
Not only are these risen rolls easy to make and incredibly delicious, but they also tell the story of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Why I Love This Recipe
- They’re easy for kids to make and can be enjoyed for brunch, snack, dinner, or dessert.
- Kids love to learn about the symbolism, making them a treat for the tummy and the heart!
Ingredients Notes
Find the full printable recipe with specific measurements below.
- Crescent rolls: Signifies the linens Jesus was wrapped in before being placed in the tomb. You can use a package of Crescent rolls, Rhodes frozen dough, or dinner rolls.
- Jumbo Marshmallows: Used to represent Christ’s body.
- Melted butter and cinnamon sugar: Symbolizes using oils and fragrant spices in preparation for burial.
Teaching the Resurrection Story with Risen Rolls
- While you gather with the kids to prepare the tomb rolls, talk about the marshmallow as Jesus’ body and the dough representing the wrapping of Jesus in linens.
- Rolling it in fragrant spices is how the body was prepared for burial. Time spent in the oven symbolizes the 3 days Jesus was in the tomb.
- Finally, the baked, disappearing marshmallow rolls signify the empty tomb on the third day and the resurrection of Christ.
- While they rolls are in the oven, you can use the time to discuss how his loved ones must have felt, and share your favorite Bible passages.
How to Make Resurrection Rolls
Separate crescent roll dough into 8 pieces and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Melt butter in a microwave safe bowl and combine cinnamon and sugar in another small bowl. Roll jumbo marshmallow in the butter then cinnamon sugar and place onto the wider portion of the dough before rolling it up into a ball, sealing the edges all around.
Dip each ball into the small bowl of melted butter and roll it into the cinnamon sugar mixture. Place each one into the prepared baking dish (or 8×10 pie plate) and bake at 350°F for 15 minutes.
Easter Resurrection Rolls Tips
- For a little extra sweetness, drizzle a vanilla glaze, cream cheese glaze, or powdered sugar icing overtop each roll.
- Use a muffin tin to bake your Easter rolls and place the dough in paper liners.
- Be sure to pinch all the seams closed so when the marshmallow melts, it doesn’t escape.
