Quick and Easy White Chocolate Covered Oreos

White chocolate covered oreos are a classic, and I even make them a little holly jolly this time of year by turning them into cute chocolate covered Christmas Oreos.

These white chocolate Oreos are always a hit at winter parties with kids or at a cookie exchange along with my snowman Oreo balls or Oreo balls for Christmas!

This recipe for white chocolate dipped Oreos takes only a few minutes to prepare yet they are so impressive when they’re done.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Oreo cookies. I used regular Oreos, but you can use any flavor you like! There are so many options to choose from nowadays but the classic cookie with cream filling is still my favorite.
  • Chocolate melting wafers. These wafers are designed to melt easily and smoothly. You can find them in the baking aisle of a lot of grocery stores and they’re also available in many bulk stores or online.
  • Decorations (optional). You don’t have to decorate your cookies, but if you do, sprinkles are always fun and they make a great addition. You can also melt some additional candy melting wafers to drizzle over the coating once it sets.

Variations

These white chocolate covered Oreos are not only super easy to make, but they’re also simple to customize! Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Use milk or dark candy melts depending on flavor preference.
  • Place the remaining chocolate in a zip-top bag or melt some more. Snip the tip of the bag and then drizzle the chocolate across the top.
  • Make them with a different flavor of Oreos.
  • Decorate them with colored sprinkles, pastels for Easter, green for St. Patrick’s day, pink and red for Valentine’s Day!
  • Add crushed candy canes as we did with these peppermint Oreo balls.
  • Sprinkle the top with crushed Oreo crumbs or nuts.
  • Place each cookie on a lollypop stick, similar to these Oreo cake pops, before dipping and then wrap in cellophane.

How to Make White Chocolate Covered Oreos

Melting chocolate can be a bit finicky but white candy melts make it easier. Heat wafers in a bowl on 50% power for 1 minute then stir. Continue to heat and stir in 15-second intervals until wafers are melted and smooth. You can also use a double-boiler to melt the wafers slowly on the stovetop.

Place your Oreos flat on a fork and gently lower them into the melted white chocolate. Use your fork to turn them over until they are completely covered.

Slide the white chocolate dipped Oreo on a baking sheet lined with parchment or waxed paper and allow the chocolate coating to cool slightly.

If you’re decorating the tops the white chocolate covered Oreos, add your sprinkles while the chocolate is still soft then allow them to cool completely. The chocolate coating will harden as it cools.

Tips and Variations

  • Different chocolate melts. Use milk or dark candy melts for chocolate covered Oreos.
  • Flavored Oreos. Make them with a different flavor of Oreos for other holidays, use carrot cake Oreos at Easter or mint creme Oreos at St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Decorate. Place remaining chocolate in a zip-top bag. Snip the tip of the bag and then drizzle chocolate across the top. Decorate them with colored sprinkles, pastels for Easter, green for St. Patrick’s day, pink and red for Valentine’s Day!
  • Crushed crumbs. Add crushed candy canes as we did with these peppermint Oreo balls or sprinkle the top with crushed Oreo crumbs or nuts.
  • Gifting. Place each cookie on a lollypop stick, similar to these Oreo cake pops, before dipping and then wrap in cellophane.
  • If the chocolate begins to harden. Pop it back into the microwave for 15 seconds and stir it.
  • Let excess chocolate run off. Before placing it on the baking sheet. This will help prevent it from pooling at the bottom of the Oreo. If you do get some pooling, draw a circle around the base with a toothpick to get a clean circle.
  • Don’t forget to line your baking sheet. Parchment paper or wax paper will help to make clean-up a breeze!

White chocolate covered Oreos are the perfect quick and easy dessert with only 2 ingredients. Decadent and impressive for the holidays but also a tasty treat anytime!
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Decorating Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 24

Ingredients

  • 2 cups white chocolate candy melting wafers
  • 24 Oreo cookies

Optional Decorations

  • Sprinkles
  • ¼ cup chocolate candy melting wafers (milk, red, green)

Instructions

  • Prep. Line a baking sheet with wax paper or parchment.
  • Melt white chocolate. In a medium, microwave-safe bowl, add 2 cups white chocolate candy melting wafers. Heat 1 minute at 50% power and stir. Continue to heat at 30 second intervals at 50% power until melted, stirring well in-between. Make sure there are no lumps in the chocolate and that it is smooth and easy to stir. You may also use a double broiler, if preferred.
  • Dip Oreos. Place the Oreos on a fork and dip into the melted chocolate. Turn to coat completely in chocolate. When the entire cookie is covered with chocolate, lift it out using the fork. Tap the fork on the side of the bowl several times to let the excess chocolate drip off.
  • Repeat dipping. Slide the Oreo onto the baking sheet with a toothpick. Repeat with remaining Oreos. If there is excess chocolate, draw a circle around the base of the cookie with a toothpick to get a clean circle. Repeat with remaining Oreos.

Optional Decorations

  • Option 1: Sprinkle the top with sprinkles and let cool.
  • Option 2: Pipe the top with melted chocolate (follow step 1 and then place melted chocolate in a zip-top bag before snipping the tip of the corner). Let set.

Notes

Variations:
  • Use milk or dark chocolate depending on flavor preference.
  • Make with different flavors of Oreos.
  • Decorate with colored sprinkles.
  • Top with chopped nuts.
  • Add crushed candy canes.
  • Sprinkle the top with crushed Oreo crumbs.
  • Place on a lollypop stick before dipping and then wrap in cellophane.
If the chocolate begins to harden: Pop it back into the microwave for 15 seconds and stir it.
Excess chocolate: Let any remaining chocolate drip off the bottom of your cookie before placing it on the baking sheet. This will help prevent it from pooling at the bottom of the Oreo. If you do get some pooling, draw a circle around the base with a toothpick to get a clean circle.
Storing: Store in an airtight container at room temperature up to 3 weeks.

Recipe FAQs

Why is the coating not firming up?

Sometimes when my kitchen is too warm, the candy melts take a while to set. Pop the cookies into the fridge to help speed up the hardening process.

Can I substitute white chocolate chips for the candy melting wafers?

Yes you can, but white chocolate can be tricky to melt. Overheating it can cause the chocolate to turn grainy and ‘seize’ which looks like a hard, clumpy mess.

Melting wafers are designed for melting, which means they don’t hold their shape when heated and will melt evenly and smoothly.

Can I use almond bark?

Same as white chocolate chips, almond bark is a bit trickier to melt. Use a double boiler for best results.

Can I make these white chocolate covered Oreos in advance?

Absolutely! The chocolate dipped cookies will keep in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks, so you can make them ahead and have them ready to serve whenever you need them!

How to store Oreos with white chocolate covering?

Store the cookies in the refrigerator or at room temperature for up to 3 weeks.
