Basic Smoothie Formula
For simple and easy smoothie recipes, follow this basic formula and then mix and match ingredients to what you have on hand with great results every time.
- Liquid: Liquid helps blend everything together whether it is a plant based non-dairy milk, dairy milk or even 100% fruit juice. I typically start with 8 ounces.
- Fruit: I prefer to use frozen fruit especially frozen bananas (makes it nice and creamy), but fresh fruit works too! Proven combinations like strawberry and banana, mixed berries or tropical fruit like pineapples and mangos all work great.
- Protein: I love to add vanilla or plain Greek yogurt but cottage cheese or peanut butter are great options, too! I love to add in a scoop of vanilla protein powder too.
- Flavor Enhancers: A touch of honey or maple syrup, warm spices like cinnamon, vanilla extract, almond extract and peppermint extract are ways to bump up the smoothie flavor. Cocoa powder is delicious if you are craving some chocolate!
- Healthy Boost: Add some oats, chia seeds, flaxseeds, hemp seeds or avocado.
- Veggies: Kale or spinach are easy add-ins but you can also use shredded zucchini, steamed cauliflower or even shredded carrots.
Tips to Make the Perfect Smoothie
- Sweeter: If your tastebuds run on the sweeter side, use juice as your base or add some honey, maple syrup or even Medjool dates.
- Thinner: If you prefer a more thin drink, just add more liquid.
- Thicker: To get a thicker texture start with frozen fruit and then add Greek yogurt.
- Favorite flavor combinations: While everyone has different taste, some smoothie combinations I have found that my family loves include:
- Strawberry + Banana
- Frozen Banana + Peanut Butter + Cocoa Powder
- Mango + Pineapple + Banana
- Peaches + Banana + Greek yogurt
- Mixed Berries + Banana
Equipment and Tools for Making Smoothies
- Best blender for smoothies: To make easy smoothies, I recommend investing in a high-quality blender. I have used a Blendtec for years but Vitamix is a great brand too.
- Storage bags: I love to prep smoothies ahead of time! I pre-portion fruits and veggies in freezer safe storage bags. Then all I have to do need is add liquid and other add-ins then blend in the morning!
Storing Smoothies
While these delicious and easy smoothie recipes taste best served right away, you can store most smoothies up to a day or two covered in the refrigerator. Just blend again to ensure everything is mixed up and drinkable.
You can also freeze leftover smoothies. I find it easiest to freeze smoothies in an ice cube tray or popsicle mold, then all you have to do is pop it out and re-blend.
FAQs
Frozen bananas are used so often in smoothies as they make them have a creamy texture. To get the same texture I would try using half an avocado plus sweetener and ice.
Choose fruit juice or a sweetened milk or yogurt. You can also add in a little honey, maple syrup or dates.
It really is your choice! Dairy milk or non-dairy milk can be used. There are so many options to choose from including almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, soy milk, cashew milk and more!
